Thick as Thieves

It’s almost amusing how Donald Trump’s hardline approach to immigration suddenly and spectacularly goes soft when it comes to friends and friends of friends. The man who insists that mass deportations are needed to keep the United States free of criminals and dangerous people, when the opportunity presents itself, rolls out the red carpet for Flavio Bolsonaro who, for want of a better word, is a fugitive. To be fair, the Brazilian former presidential candidate was not, as far as this writer can tell, under indictment or arrest — however, he is under investigation in Brazil and a judge had ordered his passport be surrendered, facts happily ignored by the Trump administration. This should come as a surprise to no one, though, as Donald Trump has made no effort to conceal his disdain for such inconvenient things such as international law and court rulings. What remains to be seen is what Bolsonaro’s roll will be in Trump’s circle? Will he be trotted out at rallies and fundraisers to extol the virtues of the ‘Trump Doctrine’? Will he be sent to Venezuela to perform shady dealings on behalf of his host? Will he set up a government in exile and work to undermine the precarious Lula da Silva administration back home? Maybe he will get one of Trump’s million-dollar visas and set up a consulting firm or perhaps he will just live at Mar-a-Lago and take in the sights.
